The Classics Slacker Reads The Scarlet Letter is a lot funnier than the original. And Nate just isn’t as dreamy as he used to be.”

—HERMAN MELVILLE

The Scarlet Letter is Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel of girls gone wild in Puritan New England, and we don’t mean the witches. Poor Hester Prynne is found guilty of adultery and sentenced to wear a red letter A on her chest for the rest of her life. It’s a totally raw deal, as she thought her husband was lost at sea when she thumped the Bible with a local man of God.

Factual author tidbit: Hawthorne was once the object of Herman Melville’s affection. But after Melville finished reading The Scarlet Letter, well, let’s just say his ardor cooled down somewhat.

Anyhoo, sit back and enjoy as The Classics Slacker covers Hawthorne’s ye olde American tale of all things self-righteous and hypocritical.

“The Classics Slacker Reads The Scarlet Letter should be required reading. I loved it!”

“I thoroughly enjoyed The Classics Slacker recap of The Scarlet Letter, which I read in high school. I recommend highly this slim, but insightful, lucid and humorous read.”
