The Scarlet Letter

The Scarlet Letter
is Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel of girls gone wild in Puritan New England, and we don't mean the witches. Poor Hester Prynne is found guilty of adultery and sentenced to wear a red letter A on her chest for the rest of her life. It's a totally raw deal, as she thought her husband was lost at sea when she thumped the Bible with a local man of God.

Factual author tidbit: Hawthorne was once the object of Herman Melville's affection. But after Melville finished reading The Scarlet Letter, well, let's just say his ardor cooled down somewhat.

Anyhoo, sit back and enjoy as The Classics Slacker covers Hawthorne's ye olde American tale of all things self-righteous and hypocritical.
